Urinalysis and Fecal Exam

Your pet’s urine and feces can give us a lot of information into the health of your pet. If your pet is having diarrhea, visible worms in stool, or losing weight, we may want a fecal sample to look further into why these symptoms are occurring. If your pet is leaking urine, urinating frequently, has abnormally smelly urine, has blood in their urine or the veterinarian suspects there may be more going on, we may request a urine sample. If you suspect your vet may require a urine sample, it is best to not let your pet urinate for a few hours prior to your appointment or on the front lawn when you arrive.

Why are canine fecal examinations recommended yearly?

The ultimate decision is dependent on your dog’s lifestyle; however, yearly fecal exams can reveal intestinal parasite infections and we can facilitate an appropriate treatment plan for your pet.

If my dog’s urine test reveals a urinary tract infection, what can I do?

Your veterinarian will make specific recommendations for your pet. Often, we recommend a urine culture so that we can ensure that the antibiotic we use will be appropriate for your pet’s bladder infection.
