Guidance on nutrition to support and maintain your pet's overall health and well-being.
Even with the knowledge that excess weight predisposes our pets to the risk of other diseases, obesity still remains a significant problem in our pet population. Up to 40% of pet dogs and cats in Canada suffer from obesity. Prevention is best and feeding appropriate quantities of quality foods play a key role in precluding obesity and its consequences. The veterinary diets we supply are scientifically proven to provide the nutritional needs of our pets and offer them a healthy foundation for everyday life. We are happy to offer nutritional consultations for all of your pets.
There are several methods of assessment for body condition scores ranging from examination to taking your pet’s measurements and imputing them into a program that will determine your pet’s ideal weight. Please book an appointment with your veterinarian to assess your pet’s weight and obtain advice on diet and exercise. Sometimes an overweight pet can have an underlying condition as well that is contributing to weight gain. Your veterinarian will be able to examine your pet to determine if your pet’s weight gain may be secondary to another health condition.
Yes! Labrador retrievers, Cairn Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Basset Hounds, Beagles and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are reportedly genetically predisposed to becoming obese. If your furry friend is one of these breeds, take extra care to not overfeed and weigh frequently to monitor weight gain/loss.
If your pet is already facing excess weight or obesity we can help you with a safe and successful weight loss regime. Our partnerships with reputed veterinary pet food companies allow us to effectively tackle and track weight loss resulting in a healthier and happier pet. In the case of overweight pets, it is advisable to have an appointment with a veterinarian to rule out any metabolic disease process prior to approaching weight loss through diet alone.
