Kitten Vaccinations

Vaccinating is a very effective method to prevent certain communicable diseases in your pet. These diseases are serious threats to unvaccinated kittens and can be life-threatening expensive to treat. Vaccinating your kitten drastically reduces the risk of contracting these diseases and also reduces the chance that and they will pass these diseases onto other kittens.

When should kittens get their first vaccination shots?

At the Kamloops Veterinary Clinic, we recommend the following protocol for vaccinating kittens: The core feline vaccine (upper respiratory viruses, panleukopenia and leukemia) should be given at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. The rabies vaccine can be given at 16 weeks. After that, the vaccines will be boosted every three years.

Does my kitten only need core vaccines?

If your kitten is going to be strictly an indoor cat, they do not have to receive leukemia or the rabies vaccine. If you have any questions about whether or not your cat will be at a higher risk of these diseases, your veterinarian can discuss the options with you.
